A modular offshore sailing course for capable sailors who want full-boat competence and logged sea miles. You’ll rotate through helm, trim, bow, pit and nav while we build safety habits, navigation, watch systems and endurance on a Verdier Class 40. The pathway scales from coastal shakedowns to Tasman passages with clear progression.

Come ocean racing with us on our Class 40 racing yacht! Regatta Racing and Academy spots are now available for NZ and Australia’s most epic regattas including Sydney–Hobart and Trans Tasman crossings. Limited crew positions keep helm time high and learning clean.

Across the programme, standards stay the same

The Academy turns skill into habit. We start with safety—personal gear, equipment handling, and emergency drills—so the basics are automatic before we leave the dock. You’ll learn the boat’s systems and run simple checklists that keep the platform reliable offshore. From there, we move into evolutions: reefing under load, clean crossovers, stack management, and tidy resets so the crew stays ahead of the boat.

Small crew, real responsibility

Modules you’ll complete

  • Safety leadership: personal gear, MOB, fire, water ingress, abandon-ship
  • Navigation & routing: synoptics, GRIBs, model comparison, route calls
  • Watch systems & night orders: endurance routines
  • Sail handling & evolutions: power budget and systems checks
Role rotations, quiet choreography

Assessments & outcomes

You’ll make time-critical decisions tied to polars, weather and energy, then review them in structured debriefs. The goal is simple: confident, repeatable operations you can take into bluewater race teams – your bridge from advanced sailing course work to full campaign roles.

What’s included / not included

  • Included: all food onboard, bunk/storage, fuel/berthing, AIS/PLB lifejacket, and coaching
  • Not included: travel, shore accommodation, insurance, meds, meals ashore, alcohol, visas, personal logbooks

Additional Information

Navigation is the Academy’s spine

Each block pairs synoptic understanding with GRIB model comparison and real route decisions. You’ll write night orders, manage watch structures, and balance speed with energy and risk—then debrief with notes you can carry into your next passage

Endurance is trained, not assumed

We coach rest plans, galley routines, and short comms that keep the watch turning when it’s rough or late. Leadership is shared: you’ll rotate through roles, take the con for segments, and practise calm, clear decisions when time is tight.

The Academy is modular by design

Start with coastal days to lock in systems and evolutions; step up to longer blocks with night sailing and live routing; then add bluewater miles as readiness builds. That progression is your route to credible Class 40 training and, ultimately, race berths

Pre-arrival is straightforward

We confirm experience, safety certifications, and health; share the gear list; and set up a WhatsApp group for logistics and media. On completion we’ll sign your logbook and map next steps—offshore passages, regatta weeks, or a bluewater sailing course block aligned to the race calendar.

Across the programme, standards stay the same

Clear briefs, small cohorts, disciplined safety, and measurable outcomes. If you want an offshore racing course that builds confident operators—not passengers—the Academy is the work.
